Meteor Crater

This picture of Meteor Crater, Arizona was taken through the airplane window en route to Orange County CA.

Meteor Crater

The crater was formed about 50,000 years ago when a giant hunk of nickle-iron, estimated to have been 50 meters wide and weighing 300,000 tons, impacted the Earth’s surface. The resulting explosion is believed to have been equivalent to a 2.5 megaton nuclear explosion — 150 times the power of the bombs used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
